How to Make a Candle Out of a Vintage Teacup and Saucer

There’s something magical about upcycling. Whether it’s a chipped heirloom or a teacup you’ve just discovered in our shop, this simple project combines creativity, sustainability, and timeless charm — the perfect weekend craft.

What You’ll Need

  • A vintage teacup and saucer (find one at Cambrian Clearance, Llanbedr)

  • Soy wax flakes – eco-friendly and clean-burning

  • A cotton or wooden wick

  • Wick stickers or a small dab of melted wax

  • A heatproof jug or bowl

  • A saucepan (for a double boiler)

  • Fragrance oil or essential oil – lavender, rose, or vanilla work beautifully

  • Optional: dried petals or herbs for decoration


 Step 1: Prepare Your Vintage Teacup

Clean and dry your teacup thoroughly. If you’re pairing it with a saucer, secure it with a little glue if you’d like the set to stay together.

Step 2: Fix the Wick

Attach your wick to the centre of the teacup using a sticker or a drop of wax. Rest a pencil or skewer across the top to keep it upright while you pour.

Step 3: Melt the Wax

Place your wax in a heatproof jug and melt it slowly in a saucepan of simmering water. Once smooth and liquid, remove from heat and stir in your chosen scent. Allow to cool slightly before pouring.

Step 4: Pour and Set

Pour the wax carefully into your teacup, leaving about a centimetre at the top.Keep the wick centred and let it cool completely — ideally overnight.

Step 5: Trim and Enjoy your Vintage Tea Cup Candle

Once set, trim the wick to around 1 cm. Light your new candle, and enjoy the soft glow of your upcycled vintage teacup.
