A good night’s sleep is one where you wake feeling refreshed and energised. If you’re not it could be your mattress.
But how do you know you need a new mattress as sometimes the signs are not always obvious and what sort of mattress should I buy? In this article, we’ll go through the top signs that your mattress is worn out and what mattress you should be looking at going forward.
Signs your mattress is on its way out:
Is it 7 or 8 years old? Most mattresses need replacing every 7 or 8 years.
Do you wake up stiff? Back or Neck Pain? You should be waking up refreshed and energised, ready for the day ahead not, numb or stiff. When this happens it’s time to buy a new mattress.
Does your mattress have signs of wear? Can you feel dents or impressions where you and your partner sleep? Any visible sagging spots, lumps or bumps means its time to change your mattress.
Do you wake frequently during the night? If it’s not related to sleep apnea, this can be a sign that your mattress is stopping you from getting a good nights sleep. Also getting disturbed by your partner when they change sleep positions is another sign you may need to upgrade your mattress.
Do you sleep better somewhere else? A sure sign that you need a new mattress is if you get a better nights sleep in a hotel or a friends bed.
What sort of mattress should I buy?
It sounds basic but size matters!
Did you know that two people sharing a standard double bed only have as much personal sleeping space as a baby cot!
With a larger mattress, you are less likely to disturb your partner’s sleep and lie with your hands behind your head comfortably.
We spend a third of our lives in bed, and an average life span of a mattress is 8 years, so don’t scrimp on a double when you really need a king size.
If you’re not buying a base from the same company measure your base to ensure you are getting the correct size mattress.

Coil or Pocket Spring?
Coil, Pocket Sprung, Memory Foam or Topped? It all starts to get a little complicated with the varying mattresses that are available. Here at Cambrian Clearance we sell a variety and have listed each below, in aid to clear the murky waters of mattress types.
Coil or open coil/ open sprung is the most widely used option when it comes to mattress making.
Springs are arranged in rows and connected to each other at the top and bottom
Pocket Spring mattresses are made from small softer springs that work independently from each other which helps to eliminate ‘roll together’
Foam in Mattress Construction
Foam mattresses can offer different layers of support, by varying their density and depth. These mattresses are particularly suited to slatted bases and adjustable beds.
Memory Foam responds to individual shapes and has good pressure relieving properties.
Cambrian Clearance sells a wide variety of mattresses that can be viewed here and divan bases.
